All about the fabrics we use and what's special about them.

This high quality fabric is manufactured in Japan. It has a grid of white High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) threads for exceptional tear strength, as well as a diagonal woven ripstop. The fabric has a waterproof urethane coating on the inside.

Water-proof and highly tear resistant, this fabric is the main external fabric of choice for our standard model bags. It comes in 4 great colours - black, lichen green, burnt orange and slate blue.

X-Pac® is a composite fabric comprised of multiple layers laminated into a single sheet. The layers in the standard pack cloth consist of a nylon face fabric, a polyester “X-Ply” mesh, a waterproof film and light taffeta backing with a water-resistant coating. Developed and distributed by the sailcloth makers Dimension-Polyant, the company discovered that much of the technology they had developed for making specialized racing sails was also capable of producing a unique bag material. A good sail needs to be as light as possible, whilst strong enough to withstand the forces running through it. To retain its intended shape the fabric needs to be stable across all dimensions. It also needs to survive the elements by not absorbing water and being resistant to UV.

The waterproofness and structure of X-Pac® make it an ideal lightweight option for our standard model bags. It is used as the main external fabric in the X-Pac® Range and comes in a multitude of colours.

Dyneema® Composite Fabric (formerly Cuben Fiber) is a patented, ultra-lightweight fabric made of flexible non-woven composite laminates which are reinforced with Dyneema® fibres. This high-performance fabric has been developed for applications such as yacht sails, airship hulls, kites and many designs that require extremely strong rip resistance and light weight.

DCF is costly and for good reason. It's 15x stronger than steel and provides the highest tear and tensile strength of any competing fabric on a weight-by-weight and thickness basis.

The hybrid variant of DCF is a 2-layer laminate material combining a thin DCF layer with a polyester plain-weave face fabric, which adds strength and makes the material look more like a traditional woven fabric.

This ultra-modern fabric provides substantial weight savings over other options, while still being waterproof and highly abrasion resistant. It is our external fabric of choice for the Ultra Light Range which demands high performance durability and the absolute best in ultra-lightweight, waterproof fabric.

The FAQs here give an overview of bag weights and how to choose the right model to suit your needs. Individual bag weights and models are specified on each product page.

Here at ROBO-KIWI we are all about lightweight bikepacking solutions. We've put a lot of time and thought (including many hours of testing in the saddle!) into designing our bags to find the perfect balance between features, weight, waterproofness and durability. In order to achieve this, we've selected the best technical fabrics available. For these reasons, our standard option is already very lightweight and is lighter than many competitors' "ultralight" options. We use a selection of Dyneema® GridStop and X-Pac® fabrics for our standard model bags.

ROBO-KIWI Ultra Light is our bag solution that goes all-out to create the lightest possible version of our products, while still maintaining functionality and durability. Excess weight is cut wherever possible. We use a hybrid Dyneema® Composite Fabric (formerly Cuben Fiber), smaller buckles, narrower straps and velcro, lower density foam inserts, etc, etc.

The ultra light solution isn’t right for everyone. If you want bike bags so durable that you’ll be able to pass them down to your grandchildren, there are plenty of bag manufactures to choose from. If you want bags that have been shown to go the distance while saving significant weight over a standard bike packing setup, ROBO-KIWI Ultra Light is for you!

This depends a lot on what you intend to use the dry bag for. The Sea to Summit Big River Dry Bag is well suited as an all round versatile dry bag for particularly wet conditions, overland expeditions or when your adventure includes water/paddle sports. It will fit comfortably in our ROBO-KIWI harnesses, but is shorter, wider and heavier for its volume compared with ROBO-KIWI dry bags. For the best bikepacking-specific dry bag, we recommend using ROBO-KIWI double-ended dry bags as they have been specifically designed for fitting on bike handlebars.

For internal organisation and modular packing inside your front bag or saddle bag, we recommend using Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sacks and Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sacks.

For temporary extra storage on longer multi-day rides, brevets or bikepacking races where you need to periodically resupply or a lightweight summit day, we recommend the extremely compact and ultralight Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Nano Day Pack.
